Los dueños de bazares en Irán están de protesta; en lo que algunos consideran el primer paso a mayores protestas sociales por la frágil economía.

El Parlamento aprobó una suba del 3% de tax sobre todos los productos excepto bienes básicos (combustible, pan, azúcar…). Esto provocó una protesta que comenzó con los joyeros de Isfahán no abriendo sus negocios, pero que se está expandiendo hacia el sector de bazar.

El presupuesto de este año tendría 50 mil millones de dólares de déficit, debido entre otras cosas a la inflación y baja del precio del petróleo; Ahmadinejad estaría presionado por aumentar impuestos. La inflación ya está en los 29.4%.

El artículo de Financial Times describe el lobby del bazar como un “ancient power”:

Ancient Persia enjoyed a high level of trade because of its position on the Silk Road. But when it lost most of its agricultural lands after the Mongol invasion in the 13th century, the concept of the bazaar, the venue where traders gather, dominated the economy, albeit with ups and downs, writes Najmeh Bozorgmehr.

Since that time, bazaar traders have been taken seriously by kings and central governments. In Iran’s contemporary history, the bazaar has financed and supported both the constitutional and Islamic revolutions in 1905 and 1979. With modernisation of Iran’s trading companies, the influence of the bazaar has been reduced but it remains a significant power in Iran’s economy.
